It amazes me every
spring to see all the signs about attending worship services on “Easter
Sunday.” It seems the same to me as if a young man would ignore his
fiancé for
weeks and then suddenly make a big deal out of Valentine’s Day. Does he
really
love her if he has to have a special day before he will show it?
Now, we humans
like an occasional special day…birthdays, anniversaries, etc. But we
need to be
sure we are nurturing our relationships with those loved ones on the
other days, too! That is
certainly no less true regarding our relationship with God. God did use special
days like Passover and the Day of Atonement in the Old Covenant to teach
certain lessons. But in the New Testament church, he walks with us every
day [“Do you not know that you are
God’s temple and God’s Spirit dwells in you?” (1st Cor.
3:16)]. It
doesn’t have to be a special occasion for us to need that
expression of love
that comes from being with God’s people in worship to our Father. So now that "Easter" is over, where have
the big signs
gone? Don't people need to be reminded that Sunday is coming and
worship times are planned for
them to attend? If anything, the other 51 Sundays of the year are more
important than “Easter Sunday.” Because then we learn that even on
"ordinary" days, we still have God’s attention.
Every Sunday is a special day with him as he waits for his people to
gather.
Won’t you be one that helps set the example for the rest of the world? |
